Puppy Yoga Comes to Freddy

By Crystal Keyamo

Fredericton is buzzing with excitement as a new wellness trend takes root in the city: puppy yoga. Launched by local yoga instructor Shayna Hall, these classes offer a delightful mix of gentle exercise and the joy of cuddling with adorable puppies.

Hall, a passionate yoga instructor, was inspired to create this unique experience after seeing its success in other cities. “I noticed how popular the classes have been elsewhere, and I thought, ‘Why not Fredericton?’” she said.

The process of selecting the puppies is both thoughtful and strategic. Hall collaborates with local breeders, ensuring that the puppies join the classes during a special window of time. “We reach out to various breeders and develop terms of collaboration with those interested,” she explained. This window occurs after the puppies are vaccinated but before they find their forever homes, allowing them to socialize in a friendly environment.

Each one-hour session begins with a gentle yoga flow, guided for beginners. For the first 45 minutes, participants focus on their practice. Then, the puppies join in to explore the room, bringing joy and laughter. The final 15 minutes are dedicated to relaxation, where participants can cuddle and play with the puppies, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.

The benefits extend beyond mere enjoyment. These classes help socialize the pups and build trust with humans, which is a huge mood booster for participants. Everyone leaves with a smile on their face!

Safety is a top priority for Hall and her team. The studio is meticulously cleaned, and staff members closely monitor the puppies, making sure they receive any extra attention they might need. They respect the puppies’ nap times and take them outside if they need a break.

While the response has been overwhelmingly positive, Hall faced some challenges in finding breeders eager to participate. One of the biggest hurdles was convincing breeders about the benefits of puppy yoga. However, she found that clear communication was key and has fostered strong partnerships with several local breeders.

Looking to the future, Hall hopes to collaborate with local shelters and rescue organizations. She would love to work with them if they have puppies available, indicating her commitment to both community and animal welfare.

Feedback from participants has been heartwarming. Fredericton has embraced this idea, and Hall is so grateful. Many participants describe the experience as therapeutic, often calling it the best way to start their day. As Freddy Puppy Yoga grows, Hall is excited about the potential for themed events and partnerships with local businesses. They’re still in the early stages, but the future looks promising.
