On April 10th 2026, UNB’s Media Arts and Culture society organized the annual MAAC Society Showcase. The Showcase allowed students to submit up to four separate pieces of film, visual art, photographs, and/or music. The event began at 6 p.m. in Marshal D’avery Hall, running until 8:30 p.m., the UNB Alumni Association sponsoring the evening.
2025–2026 MAAC Film representative Autumn Roy commented:
“Joining the MAAC society as [the] film representative was the best way to spend my final year of university. I have so enjoyed being part of the traditions of this tightly knit community, and am so happy with our efforts that made for a successful end of year showcase. I will always be proud and grateful for my time as a MAAC student.”
The Showcase screened 12 student-made short films (5–10 minutes each) with other visual art lining the halls. Students submitted projects from almost every film-related course, including: MAAC 2022, 2998, 2999, 3065, and 3101. Marshal D’avery had a full makeover, with balloons, a newly implemented red carpet, flashing lights to simulate paparazzi, ample snacks, and a photo booth.
Daniel Wright, a first-year film student at UNB shared his experience:
“The event was very inspiring and enlightened me on the community of the MAAC society. It has made me very excited to submit another project next year.”
Halfway through the night, ballots were handed out to all UNB students at the Showcase to elect the 2026–2027 MAAC representatives. Hutch Vicaire became MAAC’s new President and Veronica Jewett became the Vice President. I was lucky enough to become MAAC’s Film representative, Esther Joline Birungi became the Lower Year representative, and Parker Sedgewick became Media representative.
Ben Gaudet, a 2025–2026 MAAC society member stated:
“It was an absolute honour to be part of the MAAC society this year. The showcase this year was a blast and it’s so wonderful to see that New Brunswick has so many up and coming artists who are all genuinely passionate about what they do and create. Best of luck to the newly elected members!”
Hutch Vicaire reflected on the showcase and becoming MAAC’s new President:
“The MAAC showcase was a wonderful time and the executives did an excellent job at making it a special time for everyone involved. I know they worked hard and spent so much time on trying to make the event the best it could be and they did exactly that. I felt excited and lucky that they screened a project of mine. It was a lot of fun to watch everyone’s work with the audience of filmmakers and professors!
“I feel very appreciative and excited that I got elected as President of the MAAC society for next year. Thank you to everyone who voted! I and the rest of the executives are looking forward to having another great year filled with fun events!”
The UNB MAAC society wants all readers of The Brunswickan to know:
“UNB MAAC Society is a student group that all share the same passion and love for media arts. We feel deeply dedicated to building a community of creatives in the Media Arts and Culture department which is why the Showcase is important to us, because we want each artist to have the chance to show the hard work they have put in their creative projects as they continue to grow as artists. We are extremely proud of the projects that we have seen this year and are looking forward to seeing more of the new generation of media artists projects in the future.”
