Moving into a new year, The Brunswickan is aiming to highlight some of the best artists New Brunswick has to offer. The following list is a carefully curated, but not exhaustive, list of amazing local artists that deserve any and all attention that can be thrown their way.
Marie Fox
Marie Fox is a wickedly talented oil painter in Fredericton, NB who creates mystical portraits steeped in their own religious vigour. The figures within her captivating paintings appear as gods of some ancient unknown cultures or legendary figures of myth. Fox seamlessly interweaves images of contemporary icons with the misty, airy settings in her paintings.
Marie Fox exhibits her work in downtown Fredericton at the Gallery on Queen. She occasionally takes limited requests for commissions.
Deanna Musgrave
Deanna Musgrave’s paintings seamlessly blend maritime atmosphere with rich visual texture and playful imagery. Teeming with spiritual energy, Deanna’s paintings are emotional in all the right ways, evoking a gentle sense of serenity. The form of many of her recent paintings are circular, reflecting the shape of the earth. Her paintings seem to portray a world of their own, filled with vibrant life, soft figures floating through the waves of her watery scenes.
This fall, Deanna paved the way for local artists as the first Digital Artist in Residence at Fredericton’s Beaverbrook Art Gallery, where her work can usually be found. She held the position from September 21, 2020 until November 5, 2020.
Tara Francis
Tara Francis is a Mi’kmaq artist from the Elsipogtog First Nation. Tara studied at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and currently produces stunning quillwork. Tara’s art blends traditional techniques with contemporary methods learned during her studies.
Through her artwork, Tara seeks to carve a deeper understanding of the experience of Indigenous peoples who have suffered under colonial rule, while responding to present-day issues. Her work can be found at the Gallery on Queen in downtown Fredericton.
Kate White
Kate White Is a metalsmith and jeweller located in Fredericton who operates her business Sterling Gale Metalworks. Originally from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Kate studied at UNB and the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, earning a Bachelor of Applied Arts Degree and Diploma in Metal Arts.
By playing into the extreme elements of her craft, White creates striking yet simple pieces that present as both modern and timeless. Kate regularly sells her work across the Atlantic provinces and has exhibited in Edmonton and Toronto.
