Fredericton, New Brunswick’s capital city, has a number of culture-based and art museums that are rich with resources, community involvement, history, and talent. Still, art in Fredericton has significantly changed and developed throughout the years – today, people are free to peruse the city’s historical buildings and gaze upon several murals and street art pieces as they stroll through the streets and gather their weekly groceries.
If you’re getting a dress shirt custom made by Jeff Alpaugh Custom, make sure to take a look at the amazing mural painted upon one of the store’s walls. The piece was undertaken by local artist Joseph Cormier. The painting is of a Californian sunset, a pastel-hued sky, and a roaring tiger.
Courmier’s painting evokes something feral, something with a base energy worthy of its edgy, eye-catching painting. Cormier’s use of strong colors – red, orange, blue, and emerald – creates a tropical feel that ties in well with the image of the tiger, making the beast feel animated and alive.
The Chess Piece Pâtisserie & Cafe also houses a small selection of unique pieces of street art. The cafe’s spacious patio is decorated with two murals: a moth covered in plants sitting against a brick-orange background (created by Brooke Burns), and an artistic rendition of the Chess Piece menu (by artist Penny Heather). The cafe is definitely worth checking out – both for its delicious baked goods and incredibly vibrant pieces of art.
Finally, we here at The Brunswickan urge you to take a look at the mural on the wall of the King Street Pharmacy. The building’s grey wall is made so much livelier thanks to a collaboration undertaken by artists Laura Forrester and Penny Heather. Forrester and Heather’s piece depicts the scene of a river leading into a yolk-like sun. The river is painted in three different shades of blue, giving the mural a rather cartoony feel while adding depth and a unique sense of flow. The piece is located downtown near several local coffee shops – check out this cute art collab while enjoying a bite to eat or something to drink!
