(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s basketball team is naming 6’7” forward Liam Shaw, of Whitby, Ontario, to their recruiting class of 2025.
The 19-year-old Shaw, who has completed a post-secondary prep year at Bill Crothers Secondary School, in Unionville, Ontario, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport season.
“Liam will bring a strong work ethic and high character to our program,” said REDS’ head coach Joe Salerno. “He’s exactly the type of young man we want to represent UNB men’s basketball, and we feel he could be a big piece for us in years to come.”
Shaw excelled with the Colts’ prep team at Crothers this past season, averaging 11 points and five rebounds per game while shooting almost 40% from the three-point line.
He’s also been a standout with the Red Rush AAU team.
“The coaches made UNB feel like home,” said Shaw. “That and the opportunity to play in an amazing program helped me make my decision.”
Shaw believes his size and shooting ability will be the things that allow him to help the REDS most.
He says making contributions right away will be among his short-term goals. “Helping win an AUS title is my long-term goal,” he added.
“It’s fairly rare to find someone with the combination of his size and ability to stretch the floor and be a consistent threat from the three-point line,” said Coach Salerno. “This was a bit of a missing piece for us this past season, so we’re excited to have Liam on board. We’re looking forward to getting him here this fall and seeing his growth over his career at UNB.”
Shaw will study Criminology while attending UNB.
