As they prepare to head to their fourth straight U SPORTS championship tournament, the UNB REDS are adding defender Madeline Renfree of Grande Prairie, Alberta, to their recruiting class of 2025.
The 17 year-old has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2025 – 2026 AUS season.
“Playing high level hockey has been my goal and I’m honoured and excited to join the REDS,” said Renfree. “I’m looking forward to growing as a player in a competitive environment and being part of such a hardworking culture.”
Finishing her Grade 12 year at Edmonton’s Louis St. Laurent Catholic High School, Renfree is a member of the Edmonton U18 AAA Junior Oilers of the Alberta Female Hockey League.
She helped the Junior Oilers to provincial titles in 2023 and 2024 and a bronze medal at the 2024 Esso Cup national U18 women’s championship.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Maddy to the REDS,” said REDS’ head coach Sarah Hilworth. “She’s a talented and disciplined defender with a strong track record of success at the AFHL and provincial level. Her dedication to the game and commitment to growth make her a great fit for our program.”
Renfree is the fourth member of the Junior Oilers to join the REDS’ incoming class of recruits.
Goaltender Taya Christie, fellow defender Jayde Sansregret, and forward Keira Grant have also signed U SPORTS Letters of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of next season.
“We look forward to seeing Madeline contribute on the ice and develop within our team’s culture,” said Coach Hilworth.
Renfree will study Psychology while attending UNB.
