(FREDERICTON, NB) Kamdyn Switzer’s goal at 19:47 of double-overtime gave the STFX X-Women a 2-1 win over the UNB REDS in game one of their best of three Atlantic University Sport final, Monday night at UNB’s Aitken Centre.
Switzer tipped Mackenzie Lothian’s (Alliston, ON) shot from the blue line to give X the win.
The goal came on X’s 44th shot on net.
The game was scoreless for almost 50 minutes before the home team broke through on an incredible individual effort.
At 10:58 of the third period, Lauren Carter (Milton, ON) worked across the front of the X net and slipped the puck past Bianca Zak (Stonewall, MB).
Then with just 1:10 to play, Terryn Mozes (Kanata, ON) fired a shot that beat REDS’ netminder Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB).
Both teams had chances in the first overtime, but both goaltenders rose to the occasion.
The REDS began the second overtime on the power-play but could not convert.
With time winding down and a third extra period on the horizon, Switzer was nicely positioned in front of McCallum for Lothian’s shot.
McCallum stopped 42 of the 44 shots she faced, while Zak made 28 saves on 29 shots.
This series now shifts to Antigonish for game two, Wednesday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
