Yoga and Meditation Tips for Social Distancing from Local Instructor Carolyn Baldwin

Carolyn Baldwin is a local yoga instructor who shared with us helpful tips on yoga for times of social distancing. Baldwin explained that working in a fast-paced environment was taking a toll on her, and how she would find peace every time she stepped onto her yoga mat. That feeling of peace was what motivated her to help others. She said practicing yoga allows you to become part of a tight-knit group of like-minded individuals.

“The physical practice of yoga made my body feel more relaxed, open and nimble. My mind benefited from it as well,” expressed Baldwin.

Baldwin explained that yoga deals with the balance of life– whether it is body or mind, light or dark, or good or bad. She mentioned that yoga is truly a lifestyle, and how yoga is more than just physical practice and body movement, but breath, meditation, mindfulness, and personal growth both on and off the mat.

Yoga has some ethical rules, and one of them is called Ahisma or non-harming. This includes not harming others in action or words, but also yourself explained Baldwin.

To help you reduce your stress and anxiety in these times of isolation and uncertainty we share with you some tips from Baldwin that will help you get started on your yoga journey.

What are some sources that help as a guide in yoga practice and Meditation:

“There are many options to practice yoga and meditation in isolation. Modo Yoga Fredericton offers free classes 2-3 times daily for anyone who would like to practice. You can also follow any of the other Modo studios as most are offering free live practices on Instagram.”

What yoga poses do you recommend for good posture?

“Any pose where you stand tall like Mountain pose or gentle backbends with a focus on lifting the sternum, opening the shoulder and the chest like cobra pose, or standing backbend.”

What exercises would you recommend for anxiety?

“Meditation. I know many who suffer anxiety, myself included. If you are really anxious meditation may not be possible. If that is the case, focus on breathing and taking small movements an example may be cat/cow.”

How long is a yoga and meditation session?

“Meditation– this can and will vary depending on the person. A meditation session can be anywhere from 5-60+ minutes. An average meditation is 15-25 minutes. A yoga session can be 30-90 minutes in length this all depends on the type of class, instructor, and schedule. The average yoga practice is 45-60 minutes.”
