Working Out At Home

The Brunswickan April 8, 2020

As people are now required to stay in their houses as much as possible, it is important to keep exercising to maintain good physical and mental condition. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), exercise can reduce the risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and depression, to name a few. The WHO has also stated that physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality making up 6% of global deaths. At these times one of the best things you can do for yourself is exercise, and even if you are stuck in your house– your workout can be as efficient as working out in a gym.

The WHO recommends people to exercise for 150 minutes per week, and you can accumulate these hours of exercise as you please. Make time to get moving– even 10 minutes of exercise three times a day, or 30 minutes five times a week, it’s really up to you.

To help you start working out from your house or to keep yourself motivated we provide you with some helpful tips and sources that will hopefully help you in your fitness journey. And remember, yoga and dancing are a great way of exercise too!

Make an Online Fitness Friend Group

Don’t feel motivated to workout while social distancing? We are lucky to live in times when we can connect with our friends and family through technology. Reach out to your friends and workout as a group online. Plan your workout routine with your friends and video call them to exercise together.

Workout Apps

There are numerous apps out there that guide you through a workout session. Many of them are free. Youtube is also a great tool that has numerous videos with dance workouts, yoga, and thousands of workouts that target different muscles. Just be sure to watch carefully and check whether the routine you’re following is designed by someone who knows what they’re doing. And don’t forget to warm up and cool down!

Get Your Own Equipment

Try using water bottles filled with rice or beans to use as weights, or sew your own bean bags to use as ankle weights. If you don’t feel you can make your own, you can also purchase great at-home workout gear that won’t take up much space in your houses such as door pull-up bars, ab wheel rollers, resistance bands, a  door-mounted punch bag, or a foam roller for your sore muscles. These can be purchased online so you don’t need to go to a store.

Make Sure You Enjoy Your Workout

If you enjoy your workout you will feel so good you will be eager to do it the next day. However, you should also take into account that there will be some days where you won’t feel like exercising, and you will have to push yourself to do it. You will improve your self-control which will also pump up your self-esteem.
