There have been over 30 lawsuits filed across the United States by the U.S. President Donald Trump alleging election fraud, with most cases having been dismissed with no court declaring a single case of voter fraud. While he has provided no evidence of voter fraud, Trump continues to insist he has “all the evidence.”
Donald Trump and Mike Pence lost the 2020 U.S. election to President-Elect Joseph Biden and Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris. The election saw a record turnout with Joe Biden securing at least six million more votes than Trump, with the former earning approximately 80 million votes and the latter approximately 74 million.
Biden’s public inauguration as the 46th president of the United States officially takes place on January 20, 2020.
In an unprecedented move, Trump refused to concede the election, and for weeks he avoided talking directly to the press. Eventually, he spoke to reporters on the eve of U.S. Thanksgiving, stating, “It’s going to be a very hard thing to concede,” but when questioned if he will leave the White House, he assured reporters, “Certainly, I will.”
Despite this, The Washington Post reported that Trump has sent almost as many fundraising emails in the weeks following the election as he did in the weeks leading up to the election.
According to Time Magazine, the U.S. Justice Department is investigating allegations that Trump is selling presidential pardons. These accusations are backed up by rumours that Trump is planning pardons for his children as well as close associates such as his personal attorney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
The recent appointment of Trump loyalists to the Pentagon suggests an attempt to make Biden’s transition to the White House more difficult. Biden’s transition team is not yet being briefed on key spy information that is vital to an effective transition into the White House. The formal transition process was also delayed because the head of the transition agency waited until the end of November to release transition funds.
Despite Trump’s attempts to hinder Biden, the president-elect has not hesitated to begin rallying his closest allies. Biden has asked coronavirus expert Dr. Anthony Fauci to act as his Chief Medical Advisor, a role Fauci immediately accepted. He has already begun talks with the transition team on how the government can take steps to get a handle on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Early indications of Biden’s administration may prove disappointing to the progressive wing of the Democratic party. The majority of Biden’s suggested administration consists of democratic politicians associated with the party’s centrist-flank, including Anthony Blinken and John Kerry.
Despite Trump’s lack of legal success, there appears to be no sign of him conceding nor stopping his lawsuits. While Biden’s transition to the oval office has begun, Trump continues to claim victory in locations such as Georgia, where he is requesting an election do-over to overturn Biden’s victory in the state.
