If you are like me, by now you have watched the traditional Christmas movies like Elf, Love Actually, and Home Alone twenty times over, so what about adding a few new gems to the list? From Edward Scissorhands to The Night Before we have you covered for this holiday season.
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
It’s an ongoing debate whether the Tim Burton classic The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie. But for the sake of this conversation, we’re going with Christmas. As long as he’s as charming as Nightmare is, we’re okay with a skeleton Santa showing up on Christmas.
- Edward Scissorhands
There’s something comforting about this odd little movie. It is a modern fairy tale with gothic overtones and a sweet center. This is a great pick if you’re looking for something to watch over the holidays that’s a little different, but still enjoyable.
- It’s a Wonderful Life
I strongly believe that few films define Christmas like Frank Capra’s 1946 fantasy starring Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, who, on the verge of committing suicide, is visited by an angel who shows him the true importance of his life.
- Office Christmas Party
T. J. Miller and Jennifer Aniston play feuding siblings who have different perspectives on how to run the company they inherited. The two have been tasked with winning the business of a high-stakes client, so Miller sets out to throw the office Christmas party to end all office Christmas parties—an event so debauched that it might end their company, too.
- The Last Holiday
Queen Latifah kills it (pun intended) in this holiday rom-com where she finds out she only has weeks to live and decides to embark on a trip of a lifetime. This is a pleasantly warm-hearted movie, and the sort of thing you might enjoy on a snowy day laid up with a hot chocolate.
- A Mom for Christmas
This 90’s movie focuses on Jessica, a motherless preteen, whose workaholic father is still mourning his late wife and spends little time with his daughter. Olivia Newton-John plays a mannequin who comes to life and grants Jessica’s wish for a temporary mom for the holidays. Corny plot? Yes. But it’s heartwarming nonetheless.
- The Night Before
The Night Before is worth putting on your naughty list. Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthoy Mackie star in this stoner Christmas movie. It’s a perfect story for those guys you know who just refuse to grow up and eventually have time come and kick them in the ass to remind them that they’re not kids anymore, and if they were, Santa would absolutely not be stopping at their houses.
- The Addam’s Family
I don’t care what you say, The Addams Family is a Christmas movie. It follows the same rule as Die Hard — if a movie takes place during Christmas, it’s a Christmas movie. End of discussion.
