The UNB Water project is a club focused on water problems in Indigenous communities.
The club was founded in 2017 and pioneered by Nathan McNally. McNally started a group of multidisciplinary students who wanted to make a change in Indigenous communities with water issues.
The purpose of the club is to find ways to spread awareness about communities that need water resources, but mainly focus on Indigenous communities. By implementing problem solving and conviction, their goal is to safeguard clean water access to Canadian communities.
Club Activities
Some of their recent projects include getting students more involved by developing teams for education, outreach, promotion and events to kick-start their goals this year.
The Water Project has successfully run water workshops with the gap-year students at the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre. They have developed connections with LuminUltra, a Canadian-based company leading in user-friendly microbiological control solutions across water related industries, and Culligan Water, a world leader in water filtration.
Moreover, the Water Project continues to collaborate with other groups and community organizations such as Enactus UNB, a non-profit organization encouraging students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action.
In the future, the Water Project seeks to develop relationships with more Indigenous communities and to seek partnerships on future water projects. They also plan to improve their water workshops and continue educating people on the importance of water.
The club has weekly meetings consisting of updates on what is happening in the different teams and what should be their next actions.
Benefits for students
Members of the club have the chance to showcase their knowledge from their university education and apply it to real-life problems. The club allows students to interact with other students from different disciplines and to build networks with fellow members. Nevertheless, members will be gaining something more valuable than academic achievement. They will also be rewarded with the fantastic feeling of doing something for a greater cause and have hope that one day, all communities will have the same access to water.
