Girls STEM Up is a student-led initiative dedicated to bridging the gender gap in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) by fostering a community of support, education, and empowerment. Founded in 2019 by passionate undergraduate students from Atlantic Canada, our mission is to promote diversity, inclusivity, and equity in STEM fields through representation, awareness, and education.
At the heart of our initiative is our annual conference, which has grown into a premier event for aspiring and established women in STEM. In 2025, we proudly hosted our 6th annual conference, themed “Connect & Conquer,” bringing together students, professionals, and industry leaders for a day of networking, mentorship, and inspiration. The conference brought together over 300 attendees at the Delta Fredericton for our most successful conference yet. Led by Chairs Nazila Ahmadi and Allyson Murray, along with a dedicated team of 26 executive members from UNB Fredericton and UNB Saint John, months of planning culminated in an event designed to provide women and non-binary individuals with the representation, mentorship, and opportunities they need to excel in STEM. This year’s conference featured inspiring keynote speakers, cutting-edge STEM research, interactive simulation labs, and engaging breakout sessions, all aimed at equipping students with the skills and confidence to take charge of their futures.
At the core of our event were our five pillars—perseverance, inclusivity, empowerment, innovation, and leadership—guiding every conversation, connection, and opportunity. With attendees from seven provinces, including students, researchers, and industry professionals, Girls STEM Up continues to be a driving force in shaping the next generation of STEM leaders.
Here’s what delegates had to say about their experience at the Girls STEM Up Conference 2025:
“The GSU event has allowed me to realize how powerful and empowering it is to connect with other women in STEM. Networking as an undergraduate student is crucial for future opportunities, especially when looking into grad school. The Girls STEM Up conference has allowed for this opportunity and has empowered me as a woman in STEM!”
“I love connecting with other women who are passionate about stem. I think I’ve learned about opportunities I didn’t even know existed.”
“I ended up sitting at a table of lovely women who I have never met before. Although this was fearful at first, I ended up meeting and speaking with the kindest women and learned a bit more about their experiences in STEM fields. In the end, I felt like I conquered a fear that allowed me to connect with other strong women.”
Beyond our annual conference, Girls STEM Up is committed to fostering year-round engagement within the STEM community. We strive to create a safe and supportive space where young women can build confidence, form meaningful connections, and explore career opportunities in STEM. Our initiative not only encourages representation but also works toward closing the gender gap by inspiring the next generation of leaders.
If you are interested in joining our community, there are many ways to get involved! Whether as a member, volunteer, or delegate, we welcome all who share our passion for advancing women in STEM.
