Responsibilities of the Editor in Chief
A) Editorial Leadership
Develop and oversee the publication’s editorial vision, ensuring alignment with The Brunswickan’s mission and values. Plan, assign, and manage all editorial content, including articles, op-eds, multimedia projects, and special editions. Maintain editorial standards by enforcing rigorous fact-checking, ethical practices, and style guidelines. Ensure coverage is diverse, balanced, and representative of the student body and Fredericton community. Write editorials, features, and other high-profile content as needed to set the tone for the publication.
B) Team Management
Recruit, train, and mentor a team of student journalists, photographers, designers, and contributors. Conduct regular staff meetings to review progress, discuss new ideas, and address challenges. Foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive work environment, promoting professional development and teamwork. Evaluate staff performance and provide constructive feedback to ensure growth and accountability.
C) Strategic Oversight
Develop and implement long-term strategies to enhance readership, engagement, and the publication’s overall impact. Innovate and adapt to evolving trends in journalism and digital media. Spearhead initiatives to expand the publication’s reach through partnerships, collaborations, and multimedia storytelling. Align operations with budgetary constraints and sustainability goals in collaboration with the Business Manager and Board of Directors.
D) Governance and Stakeholder Relations
Work closely with The Brunswickan’s Board of Directors to uphold the publication’s governance framework. Represent the publication at university events, media forums, and community engagements to maintain its reputation and visibility. Liaise with university administration, external partners, and advertisers to secure support and resources.
E) Operational Management
Oversee the publication calendar, ensuring timely production and distribution of content. Manage crisis situations, including corrections, public responses, and reputational challenges. Monitor and evaluate key performance metrics such as readership statistics, social media engagement, and financial performance. Ensure compliance with copyright, libel, and other legal standards.
F) Innovation and Digital Strategy
Lead the modernization of The Brunswickan’s online presence, focusing on website optimization and user experience. Oversee the development and growth of multimedia platforms, including video content, podcasts, and interactive features. Implement social media strategies to engage audiences and drive traffic to the publication.
Qualifications
1. Education and Experience
Actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree (Must be a student of UNBF or STU).
Proven experience in journalism, editorial leadership, or a related field.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage complex editorial operations.
Experience with digital tools, content management systems, and social media platforms.

A) Print Leadership

Produce 8 magazines for the 2025-2026 publishing term — UNB Print.

By meeting production targets while collaborating with the Creative Director, you will help grow the publication’s photographic reputation while ensuring that the visual storytelling remains both impactful and timely. Access provided to our photography equipment—cameras, lenses, and even a darkroom—to support your work.
Critical Objective:
To consistently produce visually compelling and high-quality photographic content while maintaining facebook, instagram, and other socials. Done such that your work enhances the storytelling and brand identity of the Brunswickan, and overall captures the essence of each story or event covered.
Responsibilities of the Creative Director
A) Visual Content Production:
Capture 8-16 photos weekly for online articles and 16-24 photos monthly for print, ensuring alignment with the publication’s design and narrative style.
Collaborate with the Editorial Board and Creative Director to plan and execute photo shoots that embody our diverse and inclusive vision.
B) Social Media:
Monitor social media metrics (Facebook, WordPress, Linkedin, Linktree, Instagram) and provide monthly analytic updates to the Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director.
Using Google Analytics
Produce visuals and graphics for up to 3–5 posts per week, adapting to evolving digital trends to keep content fresh and engaging.
C) Equipment and Workflow Management:
Utilize provided photography equipment—including cameras, lenses, and darkroom facilities—to deliver high-quality images.
Organize and store photos on Google Images and Google Drive for easy archival efforts.
D) Team Collaboration and Mentorship:
Engage with volunteers to gain creative input and foster a collaborative environment – gathering student’s comics, photos, and other visual content.
Participate in editorial and pitch meetings to provide updates and incorporate feedback for continuous improvement.
