Kubla Khan is UNB Fredericton’s on-campus writing group. The group rebranded two years ago under the Albert Ross Undergraduate English Society (ARUES). Kubla Khan elects a chair annually to organize the group. This year’s chair is Victoria Mullin-Lamarche, a third-year Joint Honors student of English and history.
Mullin-Lamarche shared her goal as chair:
“[I want to] help ease some of the stress of the school year by creating a safe and fun environment for creative writing and workshopping. Each session I provide both solo and collaborative writing prompts. I sometimes try to relate these to general themes, like Halloween.”
Mullin-Lamarche explains that on paper, Kubla Khan is a writing group, but that’s not all they offer.
“If the group overall is feeling pretty bogged down and the last thing we want to do is more writing, even if it is fun writing, then we brainstorm characters and plot together and create a bit of an oral story. It’s honestly a lot of fun!”
Kubla Khan also holds student writing workshops. Victoria gives a rundown of how workshops work:
“[Email] pieces [you want] workshopped to the ARUES email (arues@unb.ca). Then I and the President and/or Vice Present of ARUES, Kirpass Kaur and Jade O’Toole respectively, [will] read the submission and print off some copies to be shared on the day of the workshop. On such a day, this would mean that at least half the time would be devoted to providing feedback on the piece, and then the other half on creative prompts as usual.”
