FREDERICTON, NB – This Saturday, May 3rd, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Hayes Farm invites Fredericton to the Open Farm Day, an inclusive, family-friendly event aimed at celebrating local food systems and sustainable living.
The event will go ahead rain or shine at 577 Hillcrest Drive, and all activities follow a pay-what-you-can model to ensure accessibility. Donations are gratefully accepted in cash or e-transfer.
A cornerstone of the day will be two Composting 101 workshops — one in English at 11:00 a.m., followed by a French-language session at 12:00 p.m. These hands-on workshops will cover basic principles and multiple methods of effective backyard composting.
Running alongside the workshops is a Spring Prep Work Party, featuring engaging farm tasks for all ages and abilities — from bed preparation and planting to general cleanup — aimed at promoting food sovereignty and strengthening the local food system. Volunteers will be rewarded with a hearty serving of vegan bean soup and ‘skijinabon’, a traditional skillet bread. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own mugs and spoons to help reduce waste. As a thank-you, participants will also receive a bag of farm-grown dry beans to take home.
Kids are in for a treat with creative, nature-themed activities including salt dough art with seeds and a scavenger huntacross the farm grounds.
