(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s swimming team is adding sprint and middle-distance freestyle specialist Edward Wares to their recruiting class of 2025.
The 17-year-old, in his Grade 12 year at Rundle Academy in his hometown of Calgary, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport season.
“We’re excited to welcome Edward,” said REDS’ head coach Marta Belsh. “His eagerness and work ethic and experience at various levels of competition make him a good bet to be successful at this level.”
“The positive atmosphere and the strong bond the team shares really impressed me,” said Wares.
Wares joins the REDS following his time with the Glencoe Gators Swim Club.
With the Gators, he qualified for the 2024 national championship meet and the Western Canadian Championships.
Wares has been a multi-sport athlete during his high school years, competing in track & field, volleyball, basketball, and cross country along with swimming.
“I love to compete and be challenged to perform at critical meets,” he said. “On top of that, I have an ability to connect with and support my teammates.”
Wares says his short-term goal as a RED is to qualify for the U SPORTS Championships. His long-term goal is to qualify for the 2028 Canadian Olympic Trials.
Wares will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Sport Studies while attending UNB.
