(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s volleyball team is adding 5’10” outside hitter Lia MacQuarrie, from Hampton, Prince Edward Island, to their recruiting class of 2025.
The 17-year-old is completing her Grade 12 year at Bluefield High School and has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent. She’ll join the REDS ahead of the 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport season.
“Lia will bring a strong work ethic and a willingness to adapt to the speed of the university game,” said REDS’ head coach Lauren Hale-Miller. “Her competitive mindset will push her and her teammates, raising the level in our gym.”
MacQuarrie helped Bluefield’s AAA girls’ team to provincial championships in 2023 and 2024, earning provincial championship tournament MVP honours both years.
A veteran member of the Red Mudd Volleyball Club, MacQuarrie was part of the club’s U14 side that captured the gold medal at the 2022 national championships.
“I feel very fortunate to have found a university that offers such a highly recognized Kinesiology program while also allowing me to continue to pursue my love of volleyball,” said MacQuarrie.
MacQuarrie has been a member of Team PEI at the U16 and U18 levels and in 2024 was named Volleyball PEI’s U16 Athlete of the Year.
“Lia’s game stood out because of her impressive defensive abilities and her strong, aggressive swing,” said Coach Hale-Miller. “She competes with intensity and has a natural competitive edge. Beyond her physical skill set, she’s open to learning and embraces feedback, which speaks to her drive to continuously improve.”
MacQuarrie says her short-term goals include further developing her technical skills and mental game and adjusting to the game at the university level.
“Long-term, I want to become a starter and help our team win an AUS championship.”
MacQuarrie will study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
