The UNB Reds’ two-year reign as Canadian university men’s hockey champions has ended.
The two-time defending champions and top-ranked team at the 2025 University Cup were defeated 3-2 in overtime by the eighth-seeded and host Ottawa Gee-Gees in Thursday night’s quarter-final.
UNB opened the scoring 13:06 into the game when Benjamin Corbeil fired a one-timer from the top of the faceoff circle. Ottawa tied it up late in the second period.
Near the midpoint of the third period, while on the power play, Cody Morgan took a pass from Cole MacKay and buried UNB’s second goal with a one-timer. The Gee-Gees equalized with less than 90 seconds remaining, forcing overtime.
The game-winner came at 16:04 of overtime when Marc-Antoine Seguin redirected a shot past Samuel Richard to seal the victory for Ottawa.
Richard made 19 saves on 22 shots for the Reds, while Ottawa’s Franky Lapenna stopped 41 of 43 shots in an impressive performance.
Ottawa will face Toronto Metropolitan University in Saturday’s semi-finals. TMU advanced after defeating Mount Royal in a game that stretched into the fifth overtime period, more than six hours after it began.
