Samantha Russell of the Acadia Axewomen basketball team is the Atlantic University Sport Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 19, 2025.
A fourth-year wing from Dartmouth, N.S., Russell led the Axewomen to two weekend road wins over the Cape Breton CAPERS and STFX X-Women, moving them into second place in the conference standings.
In Friday night’s 87-73 win over the CAPERS, Russell managed a game-high 30 points, 17 rebounds and seven steals, to go along with five assists and a block.
She followed that up Saturday with 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 74-66 victory over STFX.

Position: Forward
Hometown: Burlington, Ont.

Oliver Peer from the UNB REDS men’s hockey team is the Atlantic University Sport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 19, 2025.
A first-year business student from Burlington, Ont., Peer was pivotal in two weekend road wins for the REDS.
In Friday night’s 3-2 overtime win over the Acadia Axemen, Peer scored twice to bring the REDS even and force overtime. He was named the game’s second star for his efforts.
Saturday, Peer added another goal to his season tally as UNB downed the Saint Mary’s Huskies 6-2 in Halifax, N.S.
