CULTURE EDITOR:
Reports to: Editor-in-Chief
Critical outcome:
- Create weekly online and monthly magazine content that covers popular culture, community events, and campus culture relevant to the UNB Fredericton student community and which meet the specifications established by the Editorial Board
- Provide engagement and readership with arts and culture content via thebruns.ca and social media
Key Activities:
- Develop concepts for four stories a week for online publication and concepts for four stories a month for magazine publication based in content relevant to the UNBF student community
- Responsible for “Upcoming Events” and other continued columns and sections
- Works closely with the creative director and the EIC in order to facilitate creative concept ideas with a mind to the artistry and themes of the publication for magazine, online, and social media content
- Lead a team of dedicated reporters by assigning stories to be covered, reviewing their articles for content, grammar, and spelling then providing guidance and feedback
- Maintain an awareness of local going-ons of the arts community
- Ensure articles meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
- Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings, and keeps weekly office hours
- Develop and sustain professional relationships with various national and local media contacts (ie: record labels, campus clubs, art galleries, etc.)
- Solicit and recruit volunteers from the campus community
Skills and Requirements:
- Must be a student at UNBF, NBCCD, NBCC, or St. Thomas University
- Previous experience in reporting or demonstrable comparable experience
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in the English language
- Tact, judgement, advocacy, respect, and leadership skills
- Proficiency with word processing and keyboarding
- Time management and scheduling
- Creativity and experience with the arts
- Demonstrable experience with social media beyond personal platforms
- Ability to work on long term projects and willingness to strive for investigative content on current and past topics relevant to the student community
