Position: Business Manager

Reports to: Board of Directors

Critical outcome:
  • Financial accountability for Brunswickan Publishing Inc;
Key activities:
  • Sit as a member of the Board of Directors;
  • Provide advice and guidance to the Board of Directors of Brunswickan Publishing Inc. on the direction and policies of the newspaper;
  • Oversee the financial management of the company;
  • Prepare the annual financial reports and financial budgets;
  • Act as a signing officer for Brunswickan Publishing Inc.;
  • In conjunction with the Editor-in-Chief, review contracts, documents, and any other instruments to ensure all terms and conditions adhere to the direction and policy of Brunswickan Publishing Inc. and to sign documents on behalf of Brunswickan Publishing Inc. which meet the company’s specifications;
  • Review and approve requests for expenditures which are within the newspaper’s policies and guidelines and sign requisitions for payment, cheques, and other financial instruments;
  • Tender the newspaper for printing prior to the start of the publishing year, and to liase with the chosen printer in case of problems;
  • Attend staff and editorial board meetings;
  • Participate in general upkeep and maintenance of office;
  • Manage the outside productions of the company.
Skill requirements:

  • Knowledge of computer software systems for word processing and keyboarding skills;

Position: News Editor

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:
  • Articles for online content, which meet the specifications established by the Editorial Board.
  • Provide readership with breaking content via thebruns.ca, and social media feeds.
Key activities:
  • Leads a team of volunteer reporters by assigning stories to be covered, reviewing their articles, providing advice, guidance and feedback;
  • Assigns articles as determined by the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board;
  • Reviews articles for content, grammar, and spelling;
  • Ensures articles meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the newspaper industry and the Board of Directors;
  • Attend staff and editorial board meetings;
  • Update breaking content online.
  • Solicits and recruits volunteers from the campus community
Skill requirements:
  • Must be a student at UNB Fredericton or St. Thomas University;
  • Previous experience in reporting or demonstrate comparable experience to the satisfaction of the Members of the Board;
  • Ability to lead a team of volunteers;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to promote the effective and efficient communication between the members and the Editorial Board;
  • Interpersonal skills, including tact and judgement, to work with the members, the Board of Directors and the clients and the customers of the paper;
  • Negotiation skill and conflict resolution skills are required to work with the team of volunteers and the Editorial Board;
  • Good English skills including writing, grammar, and spelling;
  • Knowledge of computer software systems for word processing and keyboarding skills.
  • Knowledge of social media for breaking content, engaging with readership and finding story ideas.
  • Ability to scour campus for content of both a proactive and retroactive nature. As well as strive for investigative content.

Position: Arts & Lifestyle Editor

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:
  • Articles for online content, which meet the specifications established by the Editorial Board.
Key activities:
  • Leads a team of volunteer reporters by assigning stories to be covered, reviewing their articles, providing advice, guidance and feedback;
  • Stays aware of local going-ons of the arts community and from this creates a relevant story list of 10 or so stories each week;
  • Reviews articles for content, grammar, and spelling;
  • Ensures articles meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the newspaper industry, CUP and the Board of Directors;
  • Attend staff and editorial board meetings;
  • Develops and sustains professional relationships with various national and local media contacts (ie: record labels, galleries, etc…);
  • Solicits and recruits volunteers from the campus community.
Skill requirements:
  • Must be a student at UNB Fredericton or St. Thomas University;
  • Previous experience in reporting or demonstrate comparable experience to the satisfaction of the Members of the Board;
  • Ability to lead a team of volunteers;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to promote the effective and efficient communication between the members and the Editorial Board;

Position: Sports Editor

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

  • Articles for online content, which meet the specifications established by the Editorial Board.
Key activities:
  • Writing, interviewing, and publication of stories for sports coverage and related topics 
  • Stays aware of local going-ons of the sports community and from this creates a relevant story list of 5 or so stories each week;
  • Reviews articles for content, grammar, and spelling;
  • Ensures articles meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the newspaper industry, CUP and the Board of Directors;
  • Develops and sustains professional relationships with various university and local sports contacts 
Skill requirements:
  • Must be a student at UNB Fredericton or St. Thomas University;
  • Previous experience in reporting or demonstrate comparable experience to the satisfaction of the Members of the Board;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to promote the effective and efficient communication between the members and the Editorial Board;
  • Interpersonal skills, including tact, judgement and tolerance, to work with the members, the Board of Directors and the consumers of the paper;

Position: Features Editor

Position: Creative Director

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:
  • All visual aspects of the Brunswickan.  
Key activities:
  • Overall design and Layout of the Brunswickan;
  • Design graphics for the paper and website;
  • Facilitate communication between all departments for graphic and photo needs;
  • Ensures design is in accordance with the standards set by the Editorial Board;
  • Coordinate with department heads to determine top stories and guide layout;
  • Achieve familiarity with the Brunswickan’s design and look;
  • Ensure there is a logical flow of articles in the layout of the newspaper;
  • Attend staff and editorial board meetings;
  • Layout all sections under guidance of the Editor-in-Chief with assistance from department heads and the Editor-in-Chief;
  • Suggest changes to the paper’s design to the Editorial Board;
  • Upon approval by the Editor-in-Chief, export final pages to PDF format for uploading to the printer;
  • Keep the Editorial Board up-to-date on Macintosh hardware and software developments as they pertain to the production of the newspaper;
  • Troubleshoot for all aspects of production;
  • Solicits and recruits volunteers from the campus community to act as photographers and designers;
  • Assign and coordinate all photographs and graphics to volunteers and staff photographer for The Brunswickan and its website;
  • Layout advertisements as directed by the Business Manager and Editor-in-Chief
  • Archive the newspaper on Issuu and on the production computer in accordance with the Brunswickan’s filing standards.
Skill Requirements
  • Must have knowledge of post production software.
  • Must have technical knowledge on the operation of manual and other camera equipment;
  • Knowledge of the adobe suite.
  • Must have a visual eye and aesthetic

Position: Marketing & Advertising Coordinator

Reports to: Business Manager & Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:
  • Solicit advertising for The Brunswickan Publishing Inc;
Key activities:
  • Developing positive relationships with the businesses of Fredericton and the surrounding area;
  • Working closely with the Business Manager to ensure a consistent stream of funds into The Brunswickan through advertising sales;
  • Attend staff meetings;
  • Soliciting advertisements from local businesses and report all sales to the Business Manager;
  • Assisting in keeping accurate financial records for The Brunswickan;
  • Assisting with the day-to-day activities of advertising for the newspaper;
  • Acting as a liaison between the paper and Free Media;
  • Assisting with ensuring the collection of accounts receivable;
  • Assisting in advertising The Brunswickan with appropriate media;
  • Assisting in marketing the paper within the University community;
  • Maintaining office hours as set in conjunction with the Business Manager;

Position: Multimedia Editor

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:
  • Produce weekly videos for the Brunswickan social media
  • Upload content to the thebruns.ca
Key activities and responsibilities:
  • Researches the background and gathers facts around an event, a coming event or area of interest;
  • Interviews people to uncover facts and solicit opinions;
  • Help edit all filmed material;
  • Maintain the photo/video equipment and keep it in good working condition;
  • Attend staff and editorial board meetings;
  • Operates various camera equipment;
  • Assist Art Director with photos;
  • Manage videographers;
  • Arrange and conduct interviews.
Skill requirements:
  • Must have technical knowledge on the operation of manual and other camera equipment;
  • Must have the ability to set up cameras; catch interesting situations and pose subjects;
  • Must have knowledge of post production software;
  • Must be a student at UNB Fredericton or St. Thomas University;

Social Media Manager

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:
  • Maintaining social media and multimedia for The Brunswickan Publishing Inc;
Key activities:
  • Developing positive relationships the student body through social media engagement;
  • Maintaining promotion, and general upkeep of The Brunswickan website and social media pages, notably Instagram and Facebook
  • Collaborating with the Creative Director and other multimedia positions in interactive and video content 
  • Assisting with the day-to-day activities of advertising for the newspaper;
  • Assisting in advertising The Brunswickan with appropriate media;
  • Assisting in marketing the paper within the University community;
  • Maintaining office hours and basic photography on assignment.
Skill requirements:
  • Must be a student at UNB Fredericton;
  • Knowledge of computer software systems for word processing and keyboarding skills, including social media;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to promote the effective and efficient communication between the members, the Editorial Board and the Board of Directors;

Position: Copy Editor

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:
  • Print-ready copies that are grammatically correct, free of spelling errors, and in accordance with Canadian Press Style standards
Key activities:
  • Revises, edits and proof-reads all copy for publishing;
  • Ensures quality standards of language and style and advises editors and the Editor-in-Chief on language issues;
  • Ensures the tone, clarity and style match the target audience;
  • Advises reporters and editors on appropriate syntax, clarity, terminology and word usage.
  • Check facts, i.e. names of people, institutions, event, etc;
  • Attend staff meetings;
  • Ensuring that libel and slander are avoided, usually done through checking facts.
Skill requirements:
  • Must be a student at UNB Fredericton or St. Thomas University;
  • Knowledge of grammatical and spelling, punctuation and syntax;
  • Knowledge of libel and how to avoid it and defend against it;
  • Knowledge of editing and proof-reading principles and practices;
  • Interpersonal skills to explain revisions and recommendations for changes.

Position: Staff Reporter

Reports to: Section Editor

Critical outcome:
  • Articles for The Brunswickan as assigned or approved by the Editor of the section.
Key activities:
  • Researches the background and gathers facts around an event, a coming event or area of interest;
  • Interviews people to uncover facts and solicit opinions;
  • Writes an article or a series of articles on the event ensuring the facts are reliable and defensible and that the content meets the standards of the newspaper;
  • Attend staff meetings;
  • Attends events and writes a summary of what occurred;
Skill requirements:
  • Must be a student at UNB Fredericton or St. Thomas University;
  • Research and analytical skills;
  • Interviewing skills;
  • Interpersonal skills including tact and judgement;
  • Effective writing skills;
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and syntax;

Full-time reporters:
  • Must ensure that at least two quotas are published per week.
  • Two short web stories and one longer story or two pieces of multimedia content and one longer story count as two quotas fulfillment.
  • Must hold one office hour per week at the same time as your editor.
Part-time reporters:
  • Must ensure that at least one quota is published per week.
  • Two short web stories, one longer story or two pieces of multimedia content counts as a quota fulfillment.
