Reds basketball opens regular season with a bang
The Reds women’s and men’s basketball teams dominated the scoreboard with their home opener VS the UPEI Panthers Saturday October 25th.
Starters for the women’s Kylee Speedy, Addie Mombourquette, Maheva Ngassm, Katie Mcafee and Zoe Osclamp opened Saturday’s game with confidence and aggression that sparked
“We still have a lot of work to do, but I’m excited to see where the team ends up, we have a lot of talent and great potential as a team.”
First to come off the bench, #12 Leah Travers, showed off her exceptional footwork and agility in the paint helping the reds gain a lead against the fighting Panthers nearing the end of the second quarter. Her uniquely high basketball IQ showed as she fought to gain a lead going into the second half.
Second year transfer Clancy Macintyre controlled the boards and dominated the paint, putting her post moves to work, and finishing gracefully at the rim. Her exceptional skill got her “Dawg” of the game as her minutes on the floor climb.
The women’s team swept the weekend with a 2-0 record to start off their regular season.
The men’s team similarly completed a 2-0 weekend sweep against the UPEI Panthers.
The Reds gained an early lead in the first quarter that ended up with a victory against the Panthers, led by Marcus Barnes and Eddn Otshudi who scored 17, and Connor Landell who went 13 for 13 at the rim, demonstrating his worth as both an offensive and defensive weapon.
Collectively the team set the tone of the game early with sharp ball movement and aggressive rebounding.
They ended the first half leading in score due to their balanced attack with high energy on both ends of the court.
Assistant coach, Jeff Morison, gave his take on where the Men’s Reds were at as a team as the regular season starts.
“Definitely a little early to tell where we are at as we approach playoffs, but [we] for sure need to do some heavy work on our offense and ball movement.”
The Reds continue the fight to a playoff spot October 31st in Cape Breton against the Capers.
