(WOLFVILLE, NS) Sean McGurn (Ottawa, ON) scored a couple of second period goals to lead the UNB REDS in a 4-1 win over the Acadia Axemen, in the third game of the best of five Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey semi-final series, Monday night in Wolfville.
With the win, the REDS sweep the series, advance to the AUS final and qualify for the U SPORTS Championship tournament, in Ottawa.
The REDS opened the scoring just 2:24 into the first period when Kale McCallum (Rothesay, NB) moved deep into the slot before firing the puck past Axemen netminder Thomas Couture (Levis, QC).
Despite being outshot, the REDS led 1-0 after 20 minutes.
In the second period, McGurn struck twice in less than three minutes to give UNB a 3-0 lead after two periods. Both goals, one at 12:38 and the second at 15:36, were scored in close proximity to the Acadia net and with confusion in front of Couture.
The Axemen got their only goal of the game off the stick of Ethan Ernst (Weyburn, SK) 1:03 into the third period, but Cole MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) restored UNB’s three goal lead a short time later.
MacKay and McCallum both finished the night with a goal and an assist.
Samuel Richard (Ste. Catherine, QC) made 24 saves on 25 shots for the win in the UNB net.
Couture allowed four goals on 42 shots, taking the loss.
The REDS will face either Moncton or Saint Mary’s in the AUS Final. The Huskies lead that best of five series 2-1 and will host game four on Tuesday night.
