A well-tailored playlist can be the key to an efficient study session. As finals season approaches, we thought The Bruns should do our part in helping fellow students—as the kids say—“lock in.” Personally, I find that slow but strong beats help me slip into a sort of flow-state, and that R&B/ Jazz vibe is what I bring to the table with this playlist:
- “Under the Magnolia Tree” by Pale Jay
We’re starting off with a Pale Jay song that sets the tone of the session, just relaxing enough to sort out your study plan. It’s simple at first but then becomes more musically engaging as it introduces a captivating overlap of melodies, building momentum to get the ball rolling.
- “Hello” by Clairo & Rejjie Snow
Baby Clairo making an appearance to keep us in check with a steady beat. It’s fun, catchy, but not overstimulating.
- “Make it Better” by Anderson Paak (ft. Smokey Robinson)
Listen, I love drums and I love bass. Anderson Paak is a genius with drumsticks and Smokey Robinson is a legendary R&B artist. Literally what could be more right?!
- “Hypnotized” by Fleetwood Mac
This might be my most played track on Spotify Wrapped this year. I’ve written many Bruns articles and done countless course readings with this playing in the background. It’s soft rock, bluesy, and reminiscent of a much cooler era.
- “Night Drive” by Rubii
In my search for songs I can work to, I found Rubii, and that brought me to this hidden gem. It’s a song you can replay over and over but is engineered in a way that you won’t get sick of it. My favorite part is the soft guitar solo at the end.
- “Minetta Creek” by Blood Orange
This is one of my favorite artists. I won’t hear a single bad thing about them. Many of you might’ve heard their song “Champagne Creek,” but “Minetta Creek” is the song, man. Devonté Hynes has the smoothest vocals while not stealing from the star of the show: the instrumental production.
- “I Don’t Trust Myself” by John Mayer
Say what you will about this man—he is a maestro on the guitar and curates the perfect blend of blues and jazz. The drums and bass are the obvious backbone, but wait there’s more… a trumpet and guitar solo crossover.
- “Blur” by The Marias
Another appearance by one of my favorite artists, creating a lovechild of psychedelia and jazz. Pro tip: any of their albums are a good study supplement.
- “Sundays” by Emotional Oranges
Yes… I’m noticing a citrus trend too. “Sundays” went viral a few years back but it deserves the hype. Not sure what they induced in this track, but I could leave it on repeat for hours.
- “Cola” by Arlo Parks
For fans of Olivia Dean or Leon Bridges, I introduce you to Arlo Parks. Her songs feel easy on the ears and “Cola” is no exception. Decisive beats and rhythm, and effortless vocals to tie it all together.
- “Stay Flo” by Solange
This R&B artist defies the expectations of her genre. Her sound is a seamless experiment of hip-hop and soul. Give yourself a little stretch and/or dance break when this comes on.
- “Sienna” by The Marias
I almost excluded this track, but it’s earned a spot even I can’t take away! The Marias are masters of creating immersive experiences with their music. Especially with this famous tune, it makes it easier to tune out the world when they’re playing in your ears.
- “Shameful Game” by Pale Jay
A full circle moment by concluding with the first artist on the list. This song’s slow tempo is calming, making a perfect vibe to wind down to, and look over the progress you made. Feel free to take your well-earned power nap while this plays on repeat in the background.
