The Brunswickan is Canada’s oldest student publication, and serves as UNB’s student media. By joining The Bruns, you’re joining centuries of history– plus it’s a great way to get involved in the community while still earning income to support your education.

We hire in two phases! In phase one, we hire our Editor-in-Chief, Business Manager, and Creative Director. In phase two, we hire the rest of our staff for next school year– that way, everyone can get ready over the summer break!

Position: Editor-in-Chief

(the big boss)

Critical outcome: 

  • Chief Executive Officer of Brunswickan Publishing Inc.
  • Responsible for editorial operations and content of the Brunswickan newspaper
  • President of Board of Directors 

Key activities:

  • Presides at all meetings of the Brunswickan;
  • Leads the Senior Team and Creative Team
  • Provides advice and guidance to the Board of Directors of the Brunswickan on the direction and policies of the company;
  • Implements the policies as decided by the Board of Directors and ensure that all sections of the newspaper adhere to these policies at all times;
  • In conjunction with the Business Manager, reviews contracts, documents and any other instruments to ensure that all terms and conditions contained within adhere to the direction and policy of the Brunswickan and signs documents on behalf of the Brunswickan which meet the specifications;
  • In conjunction with the Business Manager, reviews and approves requests for expenditures which are within the policies and guidelines and signs requisitions for payment, cheques and other financial instruments;
  • Manages the day-to-day operations as part of the Editorial board with responsibility for the content of the newspaper and of the articles in the newspaper;
  • Meets the concerns and needs of the readership;
  • Sets the direction and determines the content for the newspaper and has a final approval on the edition before copy is printed;
  • Provides advice and guidance to the team of editors, determines work plans and priorities, evaluates work and provides feedback to members of the Editorial Board, staff members and volunteers;
  • Ensures that a comfortable and engaging atmosphere is present for all members and non-members;
  • Ensures that the copy adheres to ethical and legal standards as established by the Board of Directors;
  • Ensures that the copy is properly edited and prepared for printing.

Skill requirements:

  • Must have previously held a position on the Bunswickan Editorial Board or demonstrate comparable experience to the satisfaction of the Members of the Board;
  • Must be a student at UNB Fredericton;
  • Ability to lead a team of employees and volunteers;
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English orally and in writing to promote the effective and efficient communication between the members and the Board of Directors;
  • Organizational and project management skills to set direction and implement work plans;
  • Interpersonal skills, including tact and judgement, to work with the Members, the Board of Directors and the clients of the paper;
  • Knowledge of the managing of a business including determining direction and overseeing day-to-day operations;
  • Knowledge of financial management of a business;
  • Ability to make decisions;
  • Negotiation skills and conflict resolution skills are required to work with the team of volunteers and with supplies and printing companies;
  • Tools, practices and techniques in operating a newspaper, including research, designing, writing, proof-reading, editing, laying-out, producing and preparing newspapers for print;
  • Extensive knowledge of the Canadian Press Style Guide

Position: Business Manager

(the moneybags lawyer person)

Reports to: Board of Directors

Critical outcome:
  • Ensure financial accountability for Brunswickan Publishing Inc.
Key Activities:
  • Sit as a member of the Board of Directors
  • Create a business operation plan, in conjunction with the Editor-in-Chief, to improve the financial performance of the publication
  • Provide guidance to the Board of Directors on the policies of the publication
  • Oversee the financial management of the company
  • Prepare the annual financial reports and financial budgets
  • Act as a signing officer for Brunswickan Publishing Inc.
  • Stand as chief human resource officer
  • In conjunction with the Editor-in-Chief, review contracts and documents to ensure all terms and conditions adhere to the policy of Brunswickan Publishing Inc.
  • Review and approve requests for expenditures within the newspaper’s policies and guidelines 
  • Tender the newspaper for printing prior to the start of the publishing year; liaising with the chosen printer in case of problems
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings
  • Hold weekly office hours
  • Some summer responsibilities are required
Skills and Requirements:
  • Must be a student at UNB Fredericton
  • Must be willing to accept fiduciary responsibility
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in the English language
  • Tact, judgement, advocacy, and leadership skills
  • Proficiency with word processing and keyboarding
  • Time management and scheduling
  • Conflict resolution skills 

Position: Creative Director

(the drawer/photo person who puts the magazine together)

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:
  • Create a cohesive vision for all visual aspects of online and magazine for the publication
  • Develop all visual content for The Brunswickan in conjunction with Media Editor
Key Activities:
  • Develop and/or manage visual content to accompany for eight stories a week for online publication and for eight stories a month for magazine publication
  • Responsible for magazine layout, and the exportation of final pages to PDF format for uploading to the printer upon approval by the Editor-in-Chief
  • Work closely with the EIC, and the Social Media, Arts, Multimedia, and News Editors, in order to facilitate creative concept ideas with a mind to the artistry and themes of the publication for magazine, online, and social media content
  • Work in conjunction with the Multimedia Editor to design graphics and manage photo and video requirements for online and magazine publication
  • Coordinate top stories and images for the website, and archive the magazine on Issuu in accordance with The Brunswickan’s filing standards.
  • Ensure visual media meets ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings
  • Solicit and recruit volunteers from the community to act as photographers or designers
Skills and Requirements
  • Must be a student at UNBF, NBCCD, or St. Thomas University
  • Must be able to use layout software (Adobe suite, etc.)
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in the English language
  • Tact, judgement, advocacy, and leadership skills
  • Must have a keen visual eye and aesthetic, and achieve familiarity with The Brunswickan’s design and look
  • Time management and scheduling (going on location, etc.)
  • Must have technical knowledge on the operation of manual and other camera equipment

  • Ability to work on long term projects and willingness to strive for truly unique creative content
