It’s Valentine’s Day and love is in the air. Whether you have a special someone or not, it is almost impossible not to think about love, romantic movies, chocolates, roses and all the other cheesy shit. But Valentine’s brings up that one experience that is universal for anyone who’s lived on campus: the Meal Hall Crush.

You know that one person at McConnel who sits a few tables over? The one who you’ve literally never spoken to, but who you sometimes dream about? That Meal Hall Crush.

Anna Sanders shared her Meal Hall crush.

“She’s so calm looking, and really cool. I’ve also heard that she’s really smart,” said Sanders. “My roommate is in her bio lab, and apparently she can do the whole thing without asking questions. But really, it’s this one cute fleece sweater she wears sometimes that drew my eye at Meal Hall.”

Sanders doesn’t waste her time just ogling her crush, however. She has a plan to get her to make a move.

“I’ll talk to people I know sitting around her, or always walk in her direction when I’m leaving or coming into Meal Hall. She usually sits near My Kitchen, where that basket of bananas is, so I always grab a banana on my way out. I don’t even like bananas,” Sanders explained.

“Like she’s so cool, I really hope she notices me. I wish I had the courage to just ask her out,” said Sanders, sadly. All the best to you Anna Sanders! You get that girl! No better time to do it than on Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day has now been proclaimed campus-wide Ask-Out-Your-Meal-Crush Day. Someone make that a cool acronym.

Having a Meal Hall Crush is an important part of the college experience. You’ve got to go through that awkward phase where you look at somebody across Meal Hall, the lecture hall, classroom—and then realize that person needs to know how awesome you are. Some people do eventually ask out their crush, and I’ve heard that some lucky individuals have actually married their Meal Hall Crushes. That’s top tier UNB romance—possibly only topped by that one couple whose eyes met across the dance floor at S Club and then lived happily ever after. A Ladies’ Night Miracle.
