Position: Business Manager

Reports to: Board of Directors

Critical outcome:

  • Ensure financial accountability for Brunswickan Publishing Inc.

Key Activities:

  • Sit as a member of the Board of Directors
  • Create a business operation plan, in conjunction with the Editor-in-Chief, to improve the financial performance of the publication
  • Provide guidance to the Board of Directors on the policies of the publication
  • Oversee the financial management of the company
  • Prepare the annual financial reports and financial budgets
  • Act as a signing officer for Brunswickan Publishing Inc.
  • Stand as chief human resource officer
  • In conjunction with the Editor-in-Chief, review contracts and documents to ensure all terms and conditions adhere to the policy of Brunswickan Publishing Inc.
  • Review and approve requests for expenditures within the newspaper’s policies and guidelines 
  • Tender the newspaper for printing prior to the start of the publishing year; liaising with the chosen printer in case of problems
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings
  • Hold weekly office hours

Position: News Editor

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:

  • Create weekly online and monthly magazine content that covers news relevant to the UNB Fredericton student community and which meet the specifications established by the Editorial Board
  • Provide engagement and readership with breaking news content via thebruns.ca and social media

Key Activities:

  • Develop concepts for four stories a week for online publication and concepts for four stories a month for magazine publication based in content relevant to the UNBF student community
  • Responsible for News Briefs and other continued columns and sections
  • Work closely with the EIC in order to facilitate news content ideas with a mind to the goals and ideals of the publication for magazine, online, and social media content
  • Lead a team of dedicated reporters by assigning stories to be covered, reviewing their articles for content, grammar, and spelling then providing guidance and feedback
  • Maintain an awareness of important news in order to update breaking news content
  • Ensure articles meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings, and keeps weekly office hours
  • Develop and sustain professional relationships with various national and local media contacts (e.g. the UNBSU, UNB faculty, etc.)
  • Solicit and recruit volunteers from the campus community

Skills and Requirements:

  • Must be a student at UNBF, NBCCD, or St. Thomas University
  • Previous experience in reporting or demonstrable comparable experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in the English language

Position: Arts & Lifestyle Editor

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:

  • Create weekly online and monthly magazine content that covers popular culture, community events, and campus culture relevant to the UNB Fredericton student community and which meet the specifications established by the Editorial Board
  • Provide engagement and readership with arts and culture content via thebruns.ca and social media

Key Activities:

  • Develop concepts for four stories a week for online publication and concepts for four stories a month for magazine publication based in content relevant to the UNBF student community
  • Responsible for “Around Town” and other continued columns and sections
  • Works closely with the creative director and the EIC in order to facilitate creative concept ideas with a mind to the artistry and themes of the publication for magazine, online, and social media content
  • Lead a team of dedicated reporters by assigning stories to be covered, reviewing their articles for content, grammar, and spelling then providing guidance and feedback
  • Maintain an awareness of local going-ons of the arts community
  • Ensure articles meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings, and keeps weekly office hours
  • Develop and sustain professional relationships with various national and local media contacts (ie: record labels, campus clubs, art galleries, etc.)
  • Solicit and recruit volunteers from the campus community

Position: Creative Director

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:

  • Create a cohesive vision for all visual aspects of online and magazine for the publication
  • Develop all visual content for The Brunswickan

Key Activities:

  • Develop and/or manage visual content to accompany for eight stories a week for online publication and for eight stories a month for magazine publication
  • Responsible for magazine layout, and the exportation of final pages to PDF format for uploading to the printer upon approval by the Editor-in-Chief
  • Work closely with the EIC, and the Social Media, Arts, Multimedia, and News Editors, in order to facilitate creative concept ideas with a mind to the artistry and themes of the publication for magazine, online, and social media content
  • Work in conjunction with the Multimedia Editor to design graphics and manage photo and video requirements for online and magazine publication
  • Coordinate top stories and images for the website, and archive the magazine on Issuu in accordance with The Brunswickan’s filing standards.
  • Ensure visual media meets ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings
  • Solicit and recruit volunteers from the community to act as photographers or designers

Skills and Requirements

  • Must be a student at UNBF, NBCCD, or St. Thomas University
  • Significant experience working with post production software (Adobe suite, etc.)

Position: Marketing & Advertising Manager

Reports to: Business Manager & Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:

  • Solicit advertising for Brunswickan Publishing Inc. on a weekly and monthly basis

Key Activities:

  • Develop positive relationships with the businesses of Fredericton and the surrounding area in order to ensure consistent funds for The Brunswickan via advertising sales
  • Responsible for securing both magazine and online advertisements
  • Work closely with the Business Manager and the EIC to assist with financial records, soliciting, and marketing
  • Work with the Social Media Manager to create opportunities for giveaways and contests involving local businesses and/or student groups
  • Work with the Multimedia Editor and Creative Director to create concepts for ads
  • Maintain an awareness of relevant marketing strategies and trends
  • Ensure advertisements meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings, and keeps weekly office hours
  • Advertise The Brunswickan to the appropriate media outlets and to the campus community under the supervision of the EIC and Business Manager

Skills and requirements:

Position: Multimedia Editor

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director

Critical outcome:

  • Assist in the development of visual output for The Brunswickan

Key Activities and responsibilities:

  • Create visual content for weekly online publication and monthly magazine publication under the direction and supervision of the Creative Director
  • Responsible for taking photographs, creating graphics, recording video, and developing innovative visual content (e.g. linographs, paintings, collage, etc.) in conjunction with the Creative Director
  • Work closely with the creative director and the EIC in order to facilitate creative concept ideas with a mind to the artistry and themes of the publication for magazine, online, and social media content
  • Maintain an awareness of local going-ons of the community in order to better create visual content
  • Ensure photography, videography, and visual content meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings, and keeps weekly office hours
  • Develop and sustain professional relationships with various national and local artistic contacts (e.g. local artists, art collectives, NBCCD, galleries)
  • Solicit and recruit volunteers from the community for photos and visuals, consulting with the Arts and Culture Editor to facilitate visual storytelling
  • Assist Arts and Culture and News Editors with video-interviews and visual content creation for social media

Skills and Requirements:

  • Must be a student at UNBF, NBCCD, or St. Thomas University
  • Significant experience working with post production software (Adobe suite, etc.)
  • Experience with professional graphic design
  • Must have a keen visual eye and aesthetic, and achieve familiarity with The Brunswickan’s design and look

Social Media Manager

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:

  • Maintain social media and online content for The Brunswickan

Key Activities:

  • Manage the distribution of content (eight stories a week) for online publication and all social media posts on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook 
  • Responsible for a weekly quota of social media content
  • Responsible for creating engagement with Brunswickan social media 
  • Work closely with the Creative Director, Section Editors, and the EIC in order to facilitate social media content that fits with the artistry and aesthetics of the publication
  • Work with the Ad Manager to create promotional content for The Brunswickan and run contests in conjunction with local businesses
  • Maintain an awareness of social media trends 
  • Ensure social media posts meet ethical, professional, and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings, and keeps weekly office hours

Skills and Requirements:

Position: Copy Editor

Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Critical outcome:

  • Edit stories and content that is grammatically correct, free of spelling errors, and in accordance with Canadian University Press Style and publication standards

Key Activities:

  • Revise, edit, and proof-read all written content for publication
  • Ensure the tone, clarity, and style fit the target audience
  • Advise reporters and editors on appropriate syntax, clarity, terminology and word usage.
  • Fact check all content for publication
  • Ensure articles meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
  • Attend staff and Editorial Board meetings, and keeps weekly office hours

Skills and Requirements:

  • Must be a student at UNBF, NBCCD, or St. Thomas University
  • Significant knowledge of grammatical and spelling, punctuation and syntax
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in the English language
  • Tact, judgement, and advocacy skills
  • Proficiency with word processing and keyboarding
  • Knowledge of libel and how to avoid it and defend against it
  • Relevant experience editing and proof-reading written content
  • Time management and scheduling
  • Commitment to following Canadian University Press and Publication content guidelines
  • Ability to work quickly to facilitate breaking news stories

Position: Staff Reporter

Reports to: Section Editors

Critical outcome:

  • Create weekly online and monthly magazine content relevant to the UNB Fredericton student community and which meets the specifications established by the Editorial Board
Full-time reporters:
  • Must write two stories for online publication each week
  • Must write one longer story monthly for the magazine
  • Must have complete a weekly check-in with the supervising Section Editor
Part-time reporters:
  • Must write one story for online publication each week
  • May choose to write one longer story monthly for the magazine with quota being re-distributed accordingly
  • Must have complete a weekly check-in with the supervising Section Editor

Key Activities:

  • Write stories for weekly online publication and for the monthly magazine based in content relevant to the UNBF student community
  • Responsible for interviewing sources, uncovering facts and soliciting relevant opinions
  • Work closely with Section Editors in order to facilitate stories with a mind to the artistry and themes of the publication for magazine and online content
  • Attend necessary events
  • Maintain an awareness of local going-ons of the community in order to suggest story ideas
  • Ensure articles submitted meet ethical and legal standards according to the standards set by the news industry, Canadian University Press, and the Board of Directors
  • Attend staff meetings
