Reds weekend preview

Game of the weekend

The UPEI Panthers men’s soccer team makes their only visit of the season to BMO Centre tonight, taking on the Varsity Reds at 7:15 p.m.

The Reds are a perfect 4-0-0 to start the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) season, outscoring competition 10-1. Meanwhile, the Panthers sit fourth in the AUS with a 1-1-2 record.

The V-Reds and Panthers also meet on Oct. 17 at UPEI.

The other games

Prior to the men’s game, UNB’s women’s soccer team hosts the Panthers. The V-Reds are off to their best start in years and sit in first place in the AUS standings with a 3-0-1 record. UPEI sits fourth with a 2-1-1 record.

Also happening on campus tonight, the V-Reds men’s hockey team hosts the Nipissing Lakers in a 7 p.m. exhibition contest at the Aitken Centre. UNB played their first pre-season game of the 2014-15 campaign on Monday and defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 4-0. The Lakers finished last season with a 7-16-5 record in the Ontario University Athletics conference.

The Varsity Reds cross country team had a solid showing in their first meet of the season last weekend. On Saturday, they’ll take on some strong competition from around the AUS in the UNB-STU Invitational held at Odell Park. It’s the only home meet of the season for the Reds.

Also on Saturday afternoon, the UNB Cougars baseball team hosts Saint Mary’s at 1 and 4 p.m. at Royals Field. On Sunday, the Cougars host Dalhousie for a pair of games at the same location.

Taking place on Sunday as well is the UNB Red Bombers’ second game of the season, visiting Holland College. The football squad looks to bounce back after a close, season-opening loss to Dalhousie last weekend. Meanwhile, the 0-3 UNB Buccaneers lacrosse team hosts Dalhousie at 2 p.m. at BMO Centre.
