Fredericton Police, Ambulance New Brunswick and the Fredericton Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on the University of New Brunswick campus Thursday around 5 p.m.

The driver of a GMC Sierra, believed by emergency officials to be a student, crashed into a brick wall between the IUC Physics and Admin Building and the Science and Forestry Library.

Cpl. Lou LaFleur said officials believe the accident was caused by a medical crisis.

“A student had a medical issue behind the wheel … possibly diabetes-related [as] there was insulin in the car,” said LaFleur.

“He basically put the pedal to the metal as they say and caused damage [to the asphalt and rocks].”

Officials had to break the windows of the car to release the victim, at which point he “came to,” said LaFleur.

LaFleur said the victim was taken to hospital, due to his medical issues and not because of injuries sustained in the accident.
