The UNB Red Blazers women’s hockey team was on the road this weekend, playing a double-header weekend against Holland College Hurricanes in Prince Edward Island. The Blazers tied 3-3 in their first game, but took a 6-1 in their second.
The women’s first goal came from a first period goal by Heather Braun – assisted by Megan Ferguson. Holland College’s Ashley Lunn returned the goal with one of her own, unassisted in the second.
The Blazers dominated the first half of the third period with a goal by Mary Jane Brothers, assisted by Karine Meunier and Hannah Nabuurs, and another one by Braun, assisted by Charisty Walls and Karine-Meunier-Pelletier.
But the Hurricanes would come back with two more goals by Lunn, assisted by Rebecca Chapman and Kailey Gauthier for the first and and Ellen Chapman for the second.
Saturday’s game saw a victory for the Blazers, with a 6-1 defeat over the Hurricanes.
Balzers’ Candace Arsenault and Brothers would score the first two goals, taking an early lead. But Hurricane Katie Flynn would put them back on the scoreboard with a goal, ending the first.
The second period was completely dominated by UNB, as Charity Walls, Braun and Meunier-Pelletier scored three goals, leading the game 5-1 to end the second.
Braun would score the sixth and final goal for the Blazers, giving them a 6-1 victory.
UNB now sits in second place with a 5-1-4 record, one spot behind Acadia.
The women will be host to Acadia next weekend, playing Saturday, Feb. 1st at 3:15pm at the Aitken Centre and Sunday, Feb. 2nd at 1:00pm in Burtts Corner.
