Keeping checked in | the good and the bad of everyday foods

Carbs are good. Carbs are bad. Eat three meals a day. Eat five small meals a day. What is right and what is wrong?

Many foods have been said to be healthy, but by others they have been said to be unhealthy. I’ll get to the bottom of it for some foods listed below!

Healthy or Unhealthy?

Eggs: Healthy
It has been said that the yolk of an egg is a large source of fat, however, the yolk actually contains 90 per cent of the egg’s calcium and iron. If you aren’t eating the yolk, why eat an egg at all?

Granola Bars: Unhealthy
Why do you think they can be left on store shelves for long periods of time? The ingredients will tell you why – large amounts of sugar keep these bars together. They even contain close to the same amount of calories and fat as chocolate bars do. Granola bars can be misleading by having high protein and fibre in them, but why not just eat an apple or piece of cheese instead?

Potatoes: Healthy
It is true potatoes contain starch, but they are a great source of fibre, potassium and vitamin C. They are also healthy as long as you eat the skins and prepare them properly, meaning they aren’t made with heaping loads of salt and butter!

100% Fruit Juice: Unhealthy
These drinks are packed full of sugar and calories whether they are 100% fruit juice or not. When they say one sweetener is not in the juice, another one replaces it. They have a much lower nutritional value than the solid fruit does, basically taking away all of its fibre content.

Multigrain Bread: Unhealthy
It is healthy to a certain degree but it is misleading. What makes grains healthy is the whole grain, which contains literally the whole grain that has the majority of the nutritional content. If whole grains are not listed in the ingredients of multigrain bread, then you are not getting the nutrients that make the bread healthy.

Remember, you can eat any food as long as it’s in moderation. Just keep in mind which has more nutritional value compared to the cholesterol, fat and calories. But, don’t forget to treat yourself once in a while. Want that chocolate bar you’ve been craving but denied yourself the past few weeks? Go ahead, life is short. Just don’t eat the cake, chips and french fries too.
